Overall, I did enjoy doing research on another artist, and also creating a video analyzing the photography. I really appreciate how this project tapped into what I am passionate about (video editing and production), as the arts all work interchangeably.

This project for me wasn't hard, however, I don't think I allotted myself enough time to fully work on this project as I had originally anticipated, which is one downside to this assignment for me. It was challenging working last minute trying to edit everything, but I'm also appreciative for it because with my desired career field, there may be moments where I have to work on deadline/at a much faster pace.

My project does include elements from Chapter 4, as I analyzed the photographic categories that her work would fall under (i.e. descriptive and aesthetically evaluative). With her work, it made me think about all the ways an artist can capture photographs and how they can utilize color and lighting to really evoke emotion. A lot of Laura Letinsky's work reflected a calm colors and lighting, so it gave off a more tranquil/peaceful mood. From this artist, I really want to try to better utilize different objects, colors and lighting to try and convey deeper and different emotions, moving forward!

"Hi Jessica, I loved your presentation and learning more about artist Mary Ellen Mark. The way you described her photography was admirable, and I think you chose good photographs of hers, for this project. I loved seeing and learning that her photographs have depth behind them (for example the one of the little boy and his mom, holding the banner in support of Vietnam). There is a lot of power behind the photos, and them being in black and white adds to the tone in my opinion. Great job!"

(Emulating a professional photographer)

Cant comment on that post

• Ask yourself why you are drawn to the image?

I was drawn to this image because I too had seen that poster, yet I did not think to photograph it, so its really cool to see how someone else was able to turn it into a photo that is so special.

• What is the main interest in the image and did the photographer compose the subject in an interesting way?

The image was delivering a message in a unique way, yet the quote is not new, but the way it was presented and how the photographer thought to photograph it adds a new layer to it and draws the viewers in.

• Does the depth of field complement the subject?

Yes, the depth of field complements the poster and allows for the viewer to recognize it and read it accordingly.

• Is the focus right for the subject?

Yes, if the focus was off, the message of the photograph would be lost because the quote is a vital component of the image.

• Does the exposure, contrast, and color saturation work for the image?

Yes, the black and white filter on the photograph really emulates the professional photographers while still allowing the focus to be on the quote itself.

 • How does the image make you feel?

It makes me feel inspired, the quote is extremely powerful, but on top of that, knowing that so many students passed by that exact poster and read it, makes me think about how that quote impacted the students at UD.

• What would you do differently to make the image more appealing?

I would not change anything about the image, I thought you did a fantastic job!
